The Matamata Lions Club was chartered in Decemer 1958 - the 8th Club in New Zealand.
Our sponsoring Club was Tauranga which began in 1957, we in turn sponsored Morrinsville Club in 1959, Putaruru 1961 and Te Aroha in 1962.
Early Club Meetings were held at the Matamata Hotel, Arawa St North. Dinner was a 5:00pm and we were required to leave by 6:00pm because that was the licencing laws at the time.
After dinner, members adjouirned to the nearby Matamata Club, and that was the beginning of a very enjoyable 50 + years of association - it is where we still meet to this day.
Still with us today is original Charter Member Neil Algar.
Neil (along with wife Eunice),has participated fully for many years, Neil has served in all executive positions being President 1983-84 and 1997-1998. He also served our community as a local Councillor and Mayor. Neil was awarded a Life Membership Lloyd Morgan Trust in 1999.
September 2020 - Graeme Waterson was awarded a Lloyd Morgan Fellowship for over 45 years of service to our Lions Club.
