We have a rubbish problem!

You will have been living in a cave if you didn’t know this. As a species we seem to be intent on trashing our own backyard, even though as products of nature you’d think we should know better. No other living creature does this. Plastic is getting into our waterways, oceans, and food chains in ever increasing amounts. We continue to pile organic and food waste into enormous piles in our landfills where it rots and releases a gas called methane into the air. Methane is a greenhouse gas, 27 times more potent than carbon dioxide. We continue to live in a dream state where our take-make-use-dispose way of life will somehow be okay or at worst be someone else’s problem.

About 30-40% of all waste that turns up at landfills is organic in nature. Poor management of this is responsible for about 4% of NZ’s greenhouse gasses. So, if we were all to deal with this problem at the source, in other words in our own homes, we would immediately make a significant impact on NZ’s emissions. None of this requires any new flash technology. In fact, it has often been said that we have all the technology we need to solve the world’s environmental problems, we just have to use it.

MPDC has funded this initiative as managing organics at home through composting is the first step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reducing waste to landfill. Central government through the Climate Change Plan has an ambitious target of seeing all households and businesses separating food waste by 2025.

This is a great first step towards meeting this target and something everyone can easily do. If all of you leave the workshop and immediately start processing your own food and organic waste, then start spreading the word and sharing the expertise you gain there, the snowball will grow and start rolling, picking up snow as it travels.

In the workshops, we will look at different composting systems to suit the home setting.  Some will be traditional, and some will be a little different.  We will look at the pro and cons of each system and how they can suit your situation.  By the end of the hour and a half, you will have all the knowledge you need to get composting at home. Hopefully you can spread the word to your neighbours and friends to do their bit too!
